Concept

Last Salutation is a film-documentary-concert style based on the exploration of evocative ambient music along with the interpretation of visualization and classical performance. Introducing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata as the opening to evoke western influences and drive the connection with the southeastern personal root through Schumann’s five-movement piece.

The stages of Emotion that I used as the title of each movement of Schumann’s Gesänge der Frühe was referencing from Kübler-Ross’s 5 Stages of Grief, but I redefined each stage based on my conscious in one period of time after my grandmother’s death. To take the listener back to the start, I used dialogues of the conversations between me and my grandmother while I spent time with her and collected materials for this project's editing in January 2022, repeating the same dialogue to interpret her Alzheimer's symptoms.

Regret

The word defines my regrets as I won’t have a chance to spend time with my grandmother anymore and I’ve wasted time growing up without looking back to see or taking care of someone behind. Regret is about the feeling about things in life that we neglected. Many regrets happen in our life, and when time passes, it can't be moved back.

From my point of view, sometimes regret is overwhelming and so people decided to take their own desire to create this dimension of things that we can't overcome or beyond our human possibilities, for instance, creating fantasy sci-fi plots. Music and Art were the places where human can freely express their hopes and dreams.

Loop

Looping is a stage I found myself thinking about longing and regret back and forth. A loop of thoughts that restrained me from moving on.

Rewind

While we regretting about something, it’s because the past is now processed in our mind as a memory. This stage is taking me back to old memories once my loved ones still lived. The footage that I used is to evoke a celebration ballroom but in the scent of the southeast which was the footage extracted from my mom and dad's wedding in 1995.

Cherish

This stage is the appreciation stage of memories that I once experienced with my loved ones. Those memories are proof of their existence, and whenever I rewind those times through my thoughts, I will always cherish them.

Empty

Emptiness has its varied definition. But at this stage, emptiness defines feeling, space, and time.
